Scientists from the Institute of Geography took part in an international seminar in Giessen, Germany 2025-07-17 12:27:00 / IMPORTANT EVENTS

On 3–7 July 2025, the Institute of Geography (Azerbaijan), named after acad.Hasan Aliyev Justus Liebig University of Giessen (Germany), Vakhushti Bagrationi Institute of Geography (Georgia), Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (Georgia) and the Caucasus Environmental NGO Network (CENN) with the financial support of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) organized an international seminar “Geography of Transnational Geoparks and Adaptation to Climate Change in the South Caucasus” in Giessen. The main objective of the seminar was to discuss a wide range of issues related to the organization, functioning and planning of geoparks, ways to solve the problems of geoparks, including environmental challenges caused by global climate change, as well as identifying potential areas for geoparks.

On the first day of the seminar, the head of the Azerbaijani delegation, the acting Director General of the Institute of Geography, Associate Professor Zaur Imrani made a presentation on the topic “Geodata for the implementation of geoparks in Azerbaijan - the current stage of field research”. In the following days, reports were made by: Professor Chingiz Ismayilov from Baku State University on "Sustainable Development Goals in the Context of Economic Transformation and Adaptation to Climate Change in Azerbaijan", PhD Samira Abushova - "The Impact of Climate Change and Morphometric Indicators of Relief on Tourism", PhD Nijat Imamverdiyev - "Renewable Energy and Climate Strategies: Geographical Analysis and Innovative Approaches", PhD Jamal Huseynov made a report on "The Impact of Modern Climate Change on the Territory of Azerbaijan", PhD Saida Zeynalova - "Ecological and Geographical Problems of Aquatic Ecosystems in the Context of Climate Change in Azerbaijan", PhD Turana Huseynova - "The Impact of Climate Change on the Quality of Life of the Population (on the Example of the Greater Caucasus Region of the Republic of Azerbaijan)", and doctoral student Baimkhanim Huseynova - "Towards the Candidacy of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Region for the Creation of a Transnational Geopark". Autonomous Republic: Geotourism Potential and Strategic Vision”, PhD student Yusif Hidayat on “Climate Change Adaptation Strategies in Azerbaijan” and Master’s student Minaya Alakbarli on “Integration of Remote Sensing in Climate Change Adaptation Strategies: A Study of Green Space Monitoring in Azerbaijan”.

The seminar also included meetings with students of the working group. During the seminar, discussions were held about joint projects on future and student exchanges in accordance with the Memorandum signed between Associate Professor Zaur Imrani from the Institute of Geography and the University of Giessen.

From 7 to 10 July 2025, as part of the practical part of the seminar, a geological excursion was organized to the Transnational Bavarian-Czech Geopark, covering the territories of Germany and the Czech Republic. During the excursion, extensive information was provided on a number of key geo-objects of both countries: various natural monuments, canyons, caves, basalt columns, volcanic rocks.

From the German side, the following were organized: the Messel quarry, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and one of the most important paleontological sites in the world; the tectonically active zone of the Eger Rift, located on the border of Germany and the Czech Republic, characterized by volcanism and seismic activity; the extinct volcano Parkstein of the Miocene period, known for its basalt columnar structures; the Flossenbürg quarry - a historical site associated with granite mining, as well as a visit to the Museum of Volcanism. On the Czech side, the participants visited the town of Planá, the Kladská National Nature Reserve and the Jeronim Information Centre, located in the former Jeronim tin mine, where information was provided on the geology and mining of the region within the framework of the international geopark.

In addition, during the geological-scientific excursion, a familiarization visit was made to the Continental Deep Drilling Center and the Goldkronach geosite, created for scientific research of the earth's crust.

During the entire trip, the participants of the geological-scientific excursion were accompanied by the director of the Bavarian Geopark, Dr. Andreas Petereck.
