In May-June 2021, a scientific expedition was organized to study the agroecosystems of the Mugan Plain with the participation of the leading researcher of the Department of Landscape Science and Landscape Planning of the Institute of Geography of ANAS named after A. Academician H.A. Aliyev, associate professor, Ph.D. Saida Zeynalova, doctoral student of the Institute Latafat Maharramli and associate professor, Ph.D Mirnukh Ismayilov.
During the expedition, the peculiarities of the formation, dynamics and management of various types of agroecosystems widespread in the Mugan Plain were studied. On this basis, cartographic modeling and large-scale (1:25 000, 1: 100 000) thematic maps have been developed.
A camera analysis of maps and field research materials showed that over the past 50-70 years, the groundwater level in the study area has increased 2-3 times in the main background landscapes and has reached a level posing a threat to the development of the agroecosystem. The main reason for the problems is improper management of irrigation water during this period, non-use of modern irrigation systems. Creation of cartographic models of agroecosystems based on field data will help solve major environmental problems in the future.
