In 2023, a meeting of the Scientific Council of the Department of Earth Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (ANAS) was held, dedicated to the annual results of scientific research in scientific institutions and organizations.

The event was attended by scientists and corresponding members of the department, directors of scientific institutions.

Vice-President of ANAS, Academician Ibrahim Guliyev said that among the tasks set for Azerbaijani science by the Decree of the President of the Azerbaijan Republic, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, “On some measures related to improving management in the field of science” and education in the Azerbaijan Republic”, “Charter of the National Academy of Sciences” Azerbaijan" with the corresponding Decree of the head of the country spoke about the need for new, modern approaches to the activities of scientific institutions. He spoke about the results of scientific research conducted in 2023 in scientific institutions, the position of Azerbaijan’s geosciences in world scientific rankings, and important results obtained during the research. He spoke about the publication of results in journals included in reputable scientific databases.

He said that, guided by the provisions of the “Action Plan on the responsibilities of ANAS in relation to scientific research work in the territories of Azerbaijan liberated from occupation,” a number of state programs were implemented in the reporting year, including the “State Program for the Socio-Economic Development of the Regions of the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2019- 2023”, “State program for increasing the international competitiveness of the higher education system of the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2019-2023”, requirements of the “State program for 2020-2024 for geological study of subsoil and efficient use of the mineral resource base”. In accordance with the Decree of the head of the country “On declaring 2023 the “Year of Heydar Aliyev” in the Republic of Azerbaijan, this year dozens of scientific conferences, seminars, meetings and other events were held in institutions included in the scientific sphere of the Department of Geosciences of ANAS, published books, articles, memoirs and interviews with scientists dedicated to Heydar Aliyev.

In 2023, 12 books, 3 monographs, 268 articles, 185 theses, 13 textbooks were published in journals and scientific publications of institutions of the Department, including 1 book, 108 articles, 51 theses, 76 articles in the Web of Science databases and Scopus. During the year, 1,547 references to the works of the institute’s employees were recorded. According to the scientific ranking table of the International Scimago Journal & Country Rank (SCIMAGO), according to 2023 indicators, Azerbaijan F. Gadyrov ranks 51st among 200 countries in the world in terms of the power of indicators in the field of geology, 43rd place in the field of geophysics and 50th place in engineering geology.

Fakhraddin Gadirov reported on the publication of scientific journals and their websites, such as “Transactions of ANAS. Geosciences", "Stratigraphy and sedimentology of oil and gas basins", "Seismographic observations on the territory of Azerbaijan", "Geography and natural resources. He stated that ANAS Transactions is included in the international SCOPUS database. The journal “Earth Sciences” was assigned an impact factor of IF=2.19: (https://www.scopus.com/sourceid/21101049623).
