Flood impacts in the northern region: geomorphological study conducted by the Institute of Geography 2026-05-05 10:05:00 / IMPORTANT EVENTS

Stara Tarixazar, Head of the “Geomorphology and Paleogeography” Laboratory at the Institute of Geography of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Doctor of Geographical Sciences and Associate Professor, carried out a visual inspection of the consequences of flood flows that occurred in the northern region of Azerbaijan on May 2–3. As a result of the intense rainfall observed in recent days, the water level in the river rose, which led to the destruction of a section of the Khachmaz–Khudat–Nabran road. In the Müqtədir village area, the flood flow destroyed a concrete pipe under the road, causing the asphalt surface to collapse into the river.

In addition, monitoring was conducted in the Devechi River. The flood flow moving along the riverbed caused the collapse of the road surface at the 5th, 6th, 8th, and 11th kilometers of the 23-kilometer highway from the Shabran district center to the “Shabran Resort” hotel. Furthermore, six bridges were damaged, and several residential houses in Khalehler village suffered material damage. Numerous landslide incidents were recorded along the road.

In the event of abnormal precipitation or further landslide processes, not only tourists of the “Shabran Resort” but also approximately 4,000 local residents of Khalehler, Shahnazarli, Sohbetli, Zeyva, Pirabadil, and other villages may be left in isolation.
