Monitoring by the Institute of Geography: Causes of the house collapse in Sabunchu identified 2026-04-09 10:36:00 / IMPORTANT EVENTS

On the night of April 7, a collapse of a private residential house occurred on Geray Asadov Street in Bakıxanov settlement, Sabunchu district of Baku. As a result of the incident, a resident of the house was trapped under the debris and sustained injuries of varying severity.

The private houses are located along the shore of Lake Bulbula, and until now no cases of landslides or soil mass movement had been observed in this area. According to monitoring conducted by staff of the “Geomorphology and Paleogeography” laboratory of the Institute of Geography, it was determined that due to intense atmospheric precipitation observed on the Absheron Peninsula on March 27–28 and  April 5–6, 2026, a wall built of limestone blocks failed to withstand the pressure of soil masses, collapsed onto the house, and caused its destruction.

It should be noted that clay-rich eluvial-deluvial deposits are widespread in this area. Under the influence of surface runoff along the slopes, cracks form in these rocks, stability is lost, and subsequently landslides may develop.

The monitoring also revealed the formation of cracks in the walls of several nearby residential buildings.
