Head of Department of the Institute of Geography: "If we change our attitude to nature, we can defeat desertification" 2025-06-19 17:04:00 / IMPORTANT EVENTS

Although everyone defines desertification in their own way, in simple terms, if the productivity and biodiversity of the landscape have been lost, then this territory becomes a desert. This is a problem for the whole world, including our country. Desertification is influenced by both natural and anthropogenic factors. The role of natural factors in desertification is 15-20 percent. Depending on the geographical conditions, desertification in 80-85, and sometimes 90 percent of cases is caused by anthropogenic factors. Desertification is most typical for arid and semi-arid territories. Aridity and desertification are close in meaning. These are factors that push each other forward. Desertification occurs faster and on a larger scale in arid areas. If you look at the natural map of Europe, these territories are forest zones. But now there are almost no natural forests left, they have all been destroyed. This leads to desertification not only in Europe, but also in other regions of the world. Despite numerous warnings, calls from heads of state and alarm signals from environmentalists, tropical forests are being destroyed in Africa, Indonesia and Brazil. Today, the area of the Great Desert in northern Africa is increasing. This was noted in a statement transmitted to AZERTAC by Mirnuh Ismayilov, head of the landscape science and landscape planning department at the Hasan Aliyev Institute of Geography of the MSE.
