An interview with Doctor of Geographical Sciences Said Safarov, the head of the department of the Institute of Geography named after acad. H.Aliyev of the MSEAR was published in the newspaper "Khalg", in the article entitled "The Caspian Sea is retreating again".
Speaking about the reasons influencing the decrease in the level of the Caspian Sea, the geographer noted that if modern climate change, global warming and water use regimes continue, this will lead to a further decrease in the level of the Caspian Sea.
According to the head of the department, the decrease in water levels leads to an increase in salinity and the concentration of pollutants, which poses a threat to many species of animals and plants.
The scientist noted that noncompliance with environmental requirements during exploration, production and transportation of hydrocarbon resources in the sea, introduction of various pollutants into the sea with industrial waste and river waters, discharge of household wastewater into the Caspian Sea without treatment, as well as discharge of fertilizers used in agriculture into the sea through rivers and canals with sediment and irrigation water, pollute it and cause serious damage to its flora and fauna. It is time for the Caspian countries to take joint measures to protect the Caspian.
