Article "What is the level of our water reserves this year?" The article contains an interview with the head of the hydrology and water resources department of the Institute of Geography named after academician H.Aliyev of the MSEAR, professor Rza Makhmudov on the specified topic.
The climatologist reported that Azerbaijan's total water reserves are estimated at approximately 30 km3, and the reduction in the annual flow of some rivers by 12-15 percent, or even 40 percent, due to climate change further reduces this figure, especially in low-water years.
“As stated in the country’s National Water Strategy, water resources are expected to decline to 20.1 km3 by 2040 due to the impact of climate change, including surface water resources to 11.6 km3. Thus, the current water deficit in the country is expected to increase from 4.0 km3 to 8.0 km3,” he added.
The head of the department said that the water supply in the country is expected to be close to normal or slightly less this year, while heavy rainfall during the monsoon season could cause short-term flooding and landslides in some mountain rivers.
Overall, forecasts show that the water crisis is worsening every year due to climate change and anthropogenic impact. In this regard, efficient use of water and prevention of pollution should become one of the main responsibilities of everyone, and in this direction, constant measures should be taken to prevent the consequences caused by climate change.
