Geographer: Falling Caspian Sea Level and Strong Rip Currents Increase Beach Hazards 2026-07-17 09:49:00 / INTERVIEWS

The retreat of the Caspian Sea and the strong rip currents that form during windy weather are increasing the danger at beaches. Experts warn that swimming in areas not designated as official beaches poses serious risks.

Head of the Caspian Sea Geography Laboratory at the Institute of Geography of the Ministry of Science and Education of Azerbaijan, Doctor of Geographical Sciences Said Safarov, told AZERTAC that the decline in the Caspian Sea's water level in recent years has led to the emergence of new hazardous coastal zones. As the shoreline retreats, areas that were previously underwater become exposed, creating unexpected depths, complex underwater terrain, and powerful rip currents, particularly in unofficial swimming areas, all of which pose significant risks to human life.

According to Safarov, drowning incidents may occur not only at unauthorized beaches but also at officially designated beaches. He noted that personal negligence, alcohol consumption, and sudden health problems are among the factors contributing to such incidents.

He explained that one of the greatest dangers during windy weather is the formation of strong rip currents. Wind pushes water toward the shore, where it accumulates due to specific coastal landforms before flowing rapidly back to the sea through narrow channels. Swimmers often fail to recognize these currents in advance and instinctively attempt to swim directly against them. As a result, they quickly become exhausted, significantly increasing the risk of drowning.

Safarov also pointed out that deep pits formed by the extraction of sand and other seabed sediments can create additional hazards.

"In such areas, swimmers may suddenly encounter unexpected deep water while moving forward. This situation poses a particularly serious risk for those who cannot swim. Even experienced swimmers may become disoriented when faced with an abrupt change in depth," he said.

The geographer urged the public to avoid entering the sea, especially during windy weather, emphasizing that the recent weather conditions have considerably increased the level of danger at beaches.

"Whenever possible, people should refrain from swimming in the sea during windy conditions. The recent drowning incidents should serve as a serious warning for everyone. Entering the sea in windy weather can be life-threatening," Safarov added.
