Geographers took part in the event on adaptation of snow and ice cover 2025-05-29 13:29:00 / IMPORTANT EVENTS

The negative impacts of climate change on the mountain cryosphere, one of the most sensitive natural systems, lead to the retreat of glaciers, reduction of permafrost areas, loss of ice mass and reduction of snow cover, which cannot but cause great concern in our world.

In this regard, on May 24-25, 2025, a meeting was held in the Republic of Georgia on adaptation to the critical situation due to the reduction of snow and ice cover, which is considered a source of fresh water in the Caucasus Mountains. The event was attended by employees of the Institute of Geography named after аcad H. Aliyev of theMSE, Doctor of Philosophy in Geography - Senior Researcher Natavan Jafarova and Leading Researcher Samira Abushova. During the meeting, N. Jafarova made a report on the topic "The Impact of Climate Change on Snow and Ice Cover in Azerbaijan: Assessment, Adaptation and Policy Interventions" and spoke about the negative impact of climate change on ice cover in our republic, possible disasters, as well as measures taken against them, as well as the National Adaptation Plan. Abushova shared with the participants of the event her views on the national and regional potential for monitoring and assessing changes and threats to snow and glacier areas in the Caucasus, early warning systems, risk reduction measures, enhancing local resilience, protecting water resources in the context of a changing cryosphere, as well as adaptation plans and policies. Our experts also took part in preparing the final decision of the meeting and its presentation to representatives of the UN Environment Programme.
