Representatives of the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) Climate Change Risk Management Office, who visited Azerbaijan on 7-10 April 2025 as part of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Glacier to Farm (G2F) mission, met with Professor Rza Mahmudov, Head of the Land Hydrology and Water Resources Department at the Institute of Geography named after Academician H. Aliyev, Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Accompanied by a local consultant Leyla Muradova and an interpreter, Arran Dunn, a consultant at Pegasys International, and Matthew Wilson, an independent consultant at Climate Change Risk Management Consulting, said that the Asian Development Bank is working on various programs in the field of agriculture and glaciers, and today’s meeting is related to one of these programs — climate risks. The goal is to collect comprehensive information on climate risks and adaptation needs, assess information gaps, policy and governance issues, and potential needs.
Professor Rza Makhmudov, who once held the position of Director of the National Department of Hydrometeorology of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and the former Research Institute of Hydrometeorology, and currently continues his scientific research in the department, spoke about the impact of climate change on the environment, including glaciers, as well as measures taken in this direction, research into alternative water sources and much more. The scientist gave extensive information about the work carried out in this area in the republic and at the Institute of Geography for more than 30 years, and also presented the guests with English versions of the books they were interested in. Finally, the ADB representative, Professor R. Makhmudov, was invited to a meeting to be held at the Asian Development Bank on April 9.
