The French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ) hosted the conference “Caspian Basin in Transition: A Bridge between Geosciences and Environmental Issues 2024.”
One of the main organizers of the event is Elnur Safarov, coordinator of CASPISNET, senior researcher at the Institute of Geography named after academician Heydar Aliyev.
The four-day conference was held with the general sponsorship of Bp, UFAZ, the Azerbaijan State University of Oil and Industry, the CASPISNET organization, as well as with the support of EiGroup and ARPA Consulting.
The conference was organized around 4 main themes: “Exploration and protection of georesources of the Caspian Basin”, “Assessment and prevention of geological hazards”, “Climate change and sustainability in transition” and “Frontiers in geoscience”. In addition to Azerbaijan, the event was also attended by representatives from Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Iran, France, Great Britain, Turkey, Norway, Switzerland, South Africa, Italy, Finland and Israel.
The conference, which became a rich platform for discussing the main problems of geosciences in a changing world, discussed new approaches, methodologies and data in the field of geosciences, problems of a world in transition, exploration and sustainability of georesources, assessment and prevention of geological hazards. Issues such as the resilience of natural and anthropogenic systems to global change were also explored. The conference also addressed issues related to sustainable development and climate change discussed at COP29.
Elnur Safarov made a report “Main characteristics of modern changes in the level of the Caspian Sea,” which was compiled in collaboration with the head of the Caspian hydrometeorology department of the Institute of Geography, member of the board of CASPISNET, Doctor of Geography, Associate Professor Said Safarov.
