
On 24 June, the next meeting of the Scientific Council was held at the Institute of Geography of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The meeting was chaired by the Institute's Scientific Secretary, PhD in Geography, Associate Professor Saida Zeynalova.
The agenda items were discussed during the meeting. First, the Head of the Land Hydrology Laboratory, Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor Rza Mahmudov, delivered a presentation entitled "Regional Climate Change and Its Impact on Water Resources." The report addressed the effects of climate change on water resources, the intensification of soil erosion caused by heavy precipitation, the washing away of fertile topsoil, and the reduction of agricultural land suitable for cultivation.
Subsequently, the Head of the Geomorphology and Paleogeography Laboratory, Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Associate Professor Stara Tarikhazar, presented the results of research on landslides, rockfalls, and flood events triggered by intense rainfall in the Ismayilli-Shamakhi region during March-May. It was noted that these natural disasters caused serious damage to the 17th kilometer of the Lahij-Demirchi road and the Ismayilli-Lahij road, while 80 hectares of agricultural land in the Lahij settlement became unsuitable for use. The presentation emphasized the importance of continuous monitoring of geological hazards along the Ismayilli-Lahij road.
During the meeting, the protocol on the results of the attestation of doctoral candidates enrolled in the Doctor of Science degree program, held on 2 February 2026, was approved. The Head of the Scientific Personnel Training Sector, PhD in Geography Museyib Yunusov, presented information on the attestation results. By the decision of the Scientific Council, the successful completion of studies by doctoral students and dissertation candidates who had successfully passed the attestation, as well as their advancement to the next year of study, was approved.
The meeting also considered the submission for publication of the monograph entitled "Medical-Geographical Study of the Impact of the Contemporary Ecogeographical Environment in Azerbaijan on the Spread of Diseases" by Solmaz Rzayeva, PhD in Geography. By the decision of the Scientific Council, the monograph was approved for publication.
