
On February 5-6, 2026, a seminar on the topic "Transboundary Water Cooperation and Peacebuilding" was held in Tbilisi, Georgia. The event was organized by UN Women Georgia under the Women in Water Diplomacy Network. Experts from various countries representing scientific and professional organizations in the region participated in the seminar. The event was financed by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office of the United Kingdom.
The Institute of Geography was represented at the seminar by Dr. Natavan Jafarova, head of the Geo-spatial Analytics and Cartography laboratory and a PhD in Geography, who participated as an expert. During the meeting, participants discussed ways to establish gender-sensitive regional cooperation as a peacebuilding mechanism in the management of transboundary water resources. Special attention was given to the development of specific initiatives based on the results of gender-sensitive conflict analysis and the principles of international water diplomacy.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the prospects for further regional cooperation were discussed, including joint scientific initiatives, data exchange, and the preparation of project proposals in the field of transboundary water management. Participation in the seminar confirmed the international recognition of the scientific potential of the Institute of Geography and expanded its opportunities in the field of sustainable development and water diplomacy in the South Caucasus region.
