Within the framework of the research project "Desertification of the Soils of the Absheron Peninsula and Southeastern Gobustan and the Development of Comprehensive Measures to Combat It," researchers from the Soil Reclamation Laboratory of the Institute of Geography PJSC under the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan conducted the final field studies from 10 to 17 July 2026 in the territories of the Balakhani and Binagadi Oil and Gas Production Departments (OGPDs) located on the Absheron Peninsula.

The main objective of the research was to comparatively investigate and scientifically assess the factors influencing the desertification process in areas with similar natural and ecological conditions but exposed to different levels of anthropogenic impact.

From a methodological perspective, the research programme covered three main areas: the study of the impact of natural dynamic processes on soil cover in technogenic landscapes; the assessment of the effects of oil-contaminated soils on surrounding ecosystems; and the investigation of the impact of oil production equipment and industrial activities on soil cover.

Field observations and experiments were carried out in all three research areas. Soil profiles were described, and soil samples were collected for subsequent laboratory analyses.
