The regular meeting of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Geography under the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan was held. The meeting was chaired by Acting Director of the Institute, Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Associate Professor Zaur Imrani.

In accordance with the agenda, a number of scientific and organizational issues were discussed. The Scientific Secretary of the Institute, PhD in Geography, Associate Professor Saida Zeynalova, together with Mirnuh Ismayilov, Head of the “Landscape Studies and Nature Use” Laboratory and PhD in Geography, presented the final report on research carried out within the framework of the state program “Urban Planning and Architecture.” She provided detailed information on the main results of the research, the achievements obtained, and their practical significance. The presentation was highly appreciated by the members of the Council, and it was particularly emphasized that the staff had successfully achieved the scientific goals set before them.

Samira Abushova, a researcher of the “Geomorphology and Paleogeography” Laboratory and PhD in Geography, presented the results of her research on landslides and flood events caused by intense precipitation. Based on observations conducted in the Quba and Qusar regions, it was noted that prolonged and heavy rainfall leads to excessive soil saturation, weakens slope stability, and consequently activates landslide processes. At the same time, a sharp rise in river water levels leads to flood events. The report provided a comprehensive analysis of the negative impacts of these natural processes on agriculture, infrastructure, and residential areas. Her presentation was received with great interest and attention by the participants.

Later, the Head of the “Strategic Development, Monitoring and Evaluation” Sector, Serkhan Jafarov, delivered a quarterly activity report. He provided detailed information on the work carried out to improve the quality of the scientific journals “Natural Resources” and “Agroinnovations” published under the Institute of Geography and to align them with international standards. During the presentation, the rules for preparing, structuring, and formatting articles were explained systematically, and important methodological recommendations were given to authors. The importance of integrating scientific publications into international indexing systems was also particularly emphasized. The presentation generated wide interest and led to productive discussions, with questions answered.

The meeting also reviewed the documents submitted by Natavan Jafarova, Head of the “Geospatial Analytics and Cartography” Laboratory and PhD in Geography, for the award of the academic title of Associate Professor. The documents were examined in accordance with established procedures, and the candidate’s scientific activity and achievements were highly appreciated.

According to the decision adopted, it was considered appropriate to submit Natavan Jafarova’s documents to the Higher Attestation Commission for the conferment of the academic title of Associate Professor.
