In the magazine  "Izvestia of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences", indexed in the scientific databases "Web of Science" and "Scopus", the article "Assessment of water resources in the bassin of Nakhchivanchay river by runoff coefficients method" was published, which was co-authored by employees of the Department of Hydrology and Water Resources of the Institute of Geography of the MSE, DSc. in geography, Prof. Rza Mahmudov, PhD in geography, doc.Movlud Teimurov, PhD in geography, doc. Ziyafet Agaev and researcher Emil Jabrailov.

Professor Rza Mahmudov reported about this in AZERTADJ.

He noted that in the article coding was used for the first time in Azerbaijan in geographical studies. The essence of geographic coding is the principle of estimating an unknown component by means of parameters (codes) combining the influence of complex factors. With the help of GIS and other multifunctional programs for calculation, comparison and probabilistic analysis, natural regularities between components are transformed into quantitative form and codes are determined that change depending on their various combinations.

Geographical codes, obtained using the most modern and synergistic scientific technologies, have high accuracy and are considered acceptable for regions with similar natural conditions, for which observation data are not available anywhere in the world. The codes are also changed synchronously in accordance with the changes occurring in the components. This creates an adequate and flexible mechanism for evaluating and forecasting any changes.

As a hydrologic code, we have chosen the average annual flow rate of the river. These codes represent values that take into account the influence of the most important factors that form the water resources of rivers. As an example, the hydrological coding of the Nakhchyvanchay basin is used in the article, based on which the water resources of the river are estimated at 214.3 million m3. The difference between the actual data on the flow of the river and the volume calculated according to hydrological standards (233.8 million m3) turned out to be very insignificant (8.31%).
