The newspaper "Khalg" published an interview under the title "Water deficit threatens the world"with Professor Rza Makhmudov, the head of the department of "Hydrology of soil and water resources" of the Institute of Geography named after Academician H. Aliyev.
The professor reported that 33 countries in the world suffer from water shortage, and noted that Azerbaijan is one of these countries. According to him, studies show that despite the increase in floods and runoff in some years, water consumption in rivers continues to decrease. A decrease was observed in precipitation compared to the long-term norm of 37 millimeters.
A hydrologist said that according to the World Meteorological Organization, the world has seen a continuous increase in temperature for 20 of the last 22 years.
Climate change has a negative impact on the environment and water bodies in general, causing serious economic damage to the population, human health, biodiversity, agriculture and infrastructure. The global demand for water has increased more than 6 times. Numerous international events are held to address such pressing issues, and the 29th International Climate Conference to be held in Azerbaijan is one of such events.
