The scientific team of the Institute of Geography named after academician H.Aliyev of the MPE AR, the head of the department of geomorphology of the coast and bottom of the Caspian Sea, DSc. on geography, Professor Amir Aliyev and the head of the department of geography of land resources of Azerbaijan, PhD in agriculture Ismayil Guliyev gave an interview to the newspaper "Azerbaijan" on the occasion of the International Maritime Day on September 24.
Speaking about the consequences of fluctuations in the Caspian Sea level, A. Aliyev noted that by now about 38 thousand hectares of Azerbaijan's territory are under water, and these lands differ in their technical characteristics and composition. According to him, the areas where the sea has dried up can be used to expand beach areas, increase resort areas, and also to develop agriculture, various industries, especially fisheries. It is necessary to work systematically so that the rising sea level does not cause much damage.Guliyev, commenting on the idea of whether the areas of land exposed after the retreat of the Caspian Sea are suitable for agriculture, said that it takes at least a hundred years to form one centimeter of soil layer. The soil scientist said that the process of soil formation occurs under the influence of vegetation, climate and other factors. I. Guliyev also added that it is possible to create only light industry facilities and install certain devices there. For example, it is possible to install a seawater desalination system, which can be moved when the sea returns.
