A meeting of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (ANAS) was held to discuss the annual reports of the Department of Earth Sciences and the Sheki Regional Scientific Center based on the results of 2023.

The event was attended by the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbayli, members of the Presidium, heads of departments of the Presidium, members of the Department of Earth Sciences, general and executive directors, scientific secretaries of the department's scientific institutions, as well as authors of important scientific results, heads of departments, young scientists and specialists, entrepreneurs and related persons.

First, those present got acquainted with the exhibition reflecting the achievements obtained in 2023 at the Department of Earth Sciences and the Sheki Regional Science Center, published scientific works, books, etc.

According to Academician Isa Habibbeyli, holding reporting meetings of departments in the Great Assembly Hall of the Presidium of ANAS will lead to bringing the important scientific results obtained to the attention of the general public.

The head of ANAS reported that in 2023, the tasks set in the relevant orders of the head of state and state programs for the institutes and organizations that are part of the branches of the Academy of Sciences were fully completed. Also, about 50 fundamental monographic works devoted to the life and multifaceted activities of the National Leader were published within the framework of the “Year of Heydar Aliyev”, with the participation of ANAS departments, including the Department of Earth Sciences.

Regarding the resolution of the Presidium of ANAS dated January 9, 2024, related to the implementation of the Order of the Head of State on declaring 2024 in the Republic of Azerbaijan the “Year of Solidarity for the Green World,” Academician Isa Habibbeyli noted that the scientific departments of ANAS submitted relevant proposals to the Presidium, on the basis of which a draft ANAS Action Plan related to the implementation of this Order was prepared.

The “ANAS Action Plan related to the implementation of the Order of President Ilham Aliyev on declaring 2024 in the Republic of Azerbaijan as the “Year of Solidarity for the Green World” dated December 25, 2023” was approved at the meeting.

The academician noted that the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to UN Framework Convention on climate change (COP29) take place this year in Azerbaijan. COP29 would create possibilities for scientific relations between the scientists of different countries and participation of azerbaijani scientists in new projects.

The head of ANAS spoke about important documents adopted last year in connection with the activities of the Academy of Sciences, among which he especially noted the Decree of the President of the Azerbaijan Republic dated November 3, 2023 “On approval of the Charter of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan” and the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Azerbaijan Republic dated November 1, 2023 year on amendments to the “Rules for organizing and conducting scientific expeditions in the Republic of Azerbaijan”, approved on August 2, 2016.

The academician also spoke about the activities implemented in accordance with the recently adopted Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers on the approval of new names of two institutes of ANAS, according to which, the Institute of History and Ethnology named after A.A. Bakikhanov and the Institute of Archeology and Anthropology were created, respectively on the basis of the Institute of History named after A.A. Bakikhanov and the Institute of Archeology, Ethnography and Anthropology.

A report on the scientific and scientific-organizational activities of the Department of Earth Sciences of ANAS in 2023 was heard.

Director of the Sheki Regional Scientific Center, Doctor of Philosophy in Physical and Mathematical Sciences Yusif Shukurlu, presented a report on the scientific and scientific-organizational activities of the Center in 2023.

In his speech, Academician Isa Habibbeyli highly appreciated the activities of the Department of Earth Sciences and Sheki Regional Scientific Center in 2023 and spoke about the tasks that they face. The head of ANAS gave relevant instructions in connection with attracting young personnel to science, increasing the number of young doctors of science, integrating science and production, expanding connections between branches of science, including conducting collective fundamental scientific research.
