Head of the Department of Hydrology and Water Resources of the Earth, Doctor of Geography, Professor Rza Mahmudov of the Institute of Geography named after H. Aliyev took part in the 10th meeting of the Azerbaijan's National Policy Dialogue on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM).
The main purpose of the meeting, held with the participation of representatives of the relevant ministries and departments of the country, open joint-stock companies, etc., was to discuss the work done, planned measures, integrated water resources management, etc. within the framework of water and environmental information and the European Union Environment Program (EU4Environment).
Professor R. Mahmudov spoke about the problems associated with the lack of water and water use in Azerbaijan, and noted that this issue was acute. Stressing that, compared with neighboring countries, Azerbaijan is one of the countries with less water availability, the scientist predicted an increase in water demand in the country, the impact of climate change on water resources and related larger problems that may arise in the water resources of Azerbaijan in the future.

The professor presented his views on the problems of scientific institutions in connection with the questions he raised about the importance of creating and using a data bank of the European Union, checking the reliability of data, etc. He said that paying for hydrometeorological data creates a big barrier for scientists and researchers at the Institute of Geography, as well as doctoral students, to obtain information related to hydrometeorology, climate and environmental monitoring. However, the European database is open to every specialist researcher and serves the development of science.
Noting that the World Meteorological Organization attaches great importance to the expansion of research in the field of hydrometeorology and the training of competent personnel in this field, the professor emphasized that he always expresses his opinion and attitude to the issue at all relevant events - congresses and meetings.
In his opinion, the closure without any grounds and without obtaining the opinion of specialists and scientists of the Research Institute of Hydrometeorology of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, which has been working in the field of hydrometeorology for more than 50 years and preparing the personnel necessary for the country, is surprising and alarming. The specialist who pointed out this fact hopes that the participants of the event will express their opinion on this issue and make an appropriate decision, which will be reflected in the adopted resolution.
The participants of the event, who watched with interest the speech of the scientist, noted the importance of including these remarks in the resolution.
