Tugay forest ecosystems, unique in their structure and rich in biodiversity, have climate-moderating effects in arid areas. They enhance agricultural landscape productivity, protect soil, regulate water resources, stabilize riverbanks, and more. These forests also increase the aesthetic and biological value of riverine areas. At present, Tugay forests are mainly found along the Kura River. They are also widely distributed along the Araz, Goychay, Girdiman, Turyanchay, and other rivers. Along with these river systems, the Kura River serves as a natural ecological corridor, while also maintaining the integrity and wholeness of our natural environment.
These views were shared with AZERTAC by Mirnukh Ismayilov, Head of the Landscape and Nature Management Laboratory at the Institute of Geography under the Ministry of Science and Education.“The width of Tugay forests sometimes reaches 7–8 km. Currently, Tugay forests are protected only in the Garayazi State Nature Reserve,” the scientist said.
